With over 4 million people in the Greater Metropolitan Area,
Toronto is Canada's largest city and the home base of Thrifty Nomad. It
also has the third largest film industry in North America and is often used
as a stunt double for New York City.
One thing that stands out in this city, literally, is the CN
Tower. It is the tallest free-standing structure in the world and, along
with the Skydome,
the trademark of the Toronto skyline. Taking the glass elevator up to the
top is quite expensive, but on a nice day, well worth it. Not only can you
get the best view of the city, you can also stand on a glass floor and look
1,122 feet straight down to the ground.
In the summer, a great way to spend the day is to take the ferry over to
Centre Island.
There you can rent tandem bicycles and rollerblades, go to the petting zoo,
or have a picnic. Unfortunately swimming in Lake Ontario is not recommended.
Within the city, there is always a musical, play or concert to see. Some
of the shows playing right now are Lion
King, Mamma
Mia, and Puppetry of the Penis. Concerts vary and every once in a while,
you can catch a free show at the Norigen Stage, down at
Harbourfront, just west of the Queen's Quay Plaza.
The best place for shopping is the
Eaton Centre. This is Toronto's biggest shopping mall and right in the
heart of downtown, at Dundas and Yonge Streets. Did you know that Yonge
is the longest street in the world? It stretches from Lake Ontario all the
way north to Thunder Bay.
And finally, for those of you who like to party, don't miss Queen Street
West (meaning west of University Avenue). This is the club district, with
every kind of club, bar and restaurant you might want. There's also a 4-storey
Playdium and the
Paramount Movie Theatre, which has 13 screens.
