The Detroit skyline from across the Detroit River

To: Detroit, Michigan
From:

For folks throughout southwestern Ontario, this major mid-western city is a quick and easy option for a weekend getaway. Located across the river from Windsor, Ontario and just 4 hours west of Toronto, Detroit is easily accessible along Hwy. 401.

Many people we've been in contact with say they don't really consider Detroit as a vacation getaway because of it's reputation for crime and poverty. Well, I've been to the Motor City many times and never had any problems. Instead, I've found a bunch of things to do that are unique, interesting and affordable.

One of the first attractions I noticed was the Henry Ford Museum. No, it's not just a museum dedicated to Ford and their cars (although there is one just across the street if it strikes your fancy). Henry Ford was one of the richest men in the United States and the collection of interesting historical items he amassed are really, really cool!!!

The exhibits are all different, ranging from George Washington's old army gear, to the first Oscar Meyer Weinermobile. Other items of note include the chair Abraham Lincoln was sitting in that fateful night at Ford's Theater and a collection of presidential limousines including the now infamous JFK convertible.

As with many attractions, the Ford museum is located just outside of Detroit in Dearborn, MI. The city is very decentralized, but is being revitalized, led by Comerica Park and the Detroit Tigers, as well as a new football stadium, the famous Fox Theater and a host of shops and restaurants.

Another real gem in Detroit is the Motown Museum. It's a little hard to find at 2648 West Grand Blvd in downtown Detroit, but is an amazing piece of history. This small house contains the recording studio that first launched the careers of the Jackson 5 and many, many more classic music stars. The history in the place is absolutely incredible and well worth the visit.

For great shopping, Great Lakes Crossing, located northwest of downtown in Auburn Hills offers theme restaurants, outlet shopping and more all in a sprawling mall setting. It's right beside the Palace which is home to the NBA's Detroit Pistons as well as many concerts and shows. Further north on I-75 is the DTE Energy Music Theater (formerly Pine Knob), a large outdoor venue which holds concerts almost every night during the spring and summer.

They call Detroit "The Motor City" for a reason. The city has a huge automotive history and also hosts the world's largest auto show, the North American International Auto Show, every January.
