Chicago... The Windy City... now this is a destination!!
Located in the heart of the mid-western US, it's a vibrant city full of
art, culture, nightlife, shopping and dining.
For an interesting start and a great overview of the city, you might try
the skydeck at the Sears
Tower. At 110 storeys, you can get a great view of Chicago and the downtown
Loop. Of course, the Hancock
Observatory also offers amazing views like
these, and also has an open-air skywalk on the 94th floor!! You also
might want to try wandering The
Magnificent Mile. Wandering from Lake Michigan up Michigan Avenue, you'll
be treated to shopping like you've probably never seen. Stores like Armani,
Gucci, Tiffany, etc, probably won't help your budget much, but it can be
fun to dream, and hey... you just might find that must-have item?
This is also a great spot to try one of the cafe's overlooking Lake Michigan...
a nice way to relax and enjoy what can be a very big and exciting city.
Getting around the city can be really easy. In the summer, the city runs
a free
trolley service to take visitors around. Otherwise, you can take the
subway or bus,
but you may want to watch out at night. Cabs are also easily accessible
from most downtown hotels.
Chicago is also a city of many different neighbourhoods, it's hard to venture
in and see everything as a visitor, so taking a Chicago
Neighbourhood Tour is a good way to see much of the city in just 4-hours.
It's a good starting point as it also might give you ideas for things you'd
like to do later on in your trip.
Sports have also been a big part of Chicago and there aren't too many landmarks
more famous than Wrigley
Field. Since 1914, this home of the Chicago Cubs has been home to some
of baseball's greatest moments. The park is the second oldest in the major
leagues, only Boston's Fenway Park
is older. Wrigley didn't even have lights until 1988 and even today, many
Cubs games are in the afternoon, even on weekdays. Tickets can be hard to
come-by, but if you plan in advance, you might be able to grab tickets from
the Box Office.
If the Cubs aren't playing, you might try the White
Sox. The city's other baseball team plays across town at Comiskey Park
and is also a great way to spend a few hours. There's also the Chicago
Bears, the Bulls,
or the Chicago
Blackhawks... which virtually guarantees that no matter when you see
Chicago, there'll be a game somewhere.
Of course, sports might not want to be the way you choose to spend your
evening. How about some authentic Chicago blues? Buddy
Guy's Legends is a great place to catch live jazz every night.
Chicago is also famous for it's museums. Some of the notable one's include
Frank Lloyd Wright's
Home and Studio, the Art
Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Contemporary Art. Everyone is
interested in something a little different, and so the Visitors
Bureau offers a comprehensive list of museums so that you can choose
something that interests you.
