Each
year more than 400,000 fans fill the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
for the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race, the world's largest single-day
sporting event.
|
Not only is Indianapolis the 12th largest city in the United States, it
is also the host of the three largest single-day sporting events in the
world: the Indianapolis "500", the Brickyard 400, and the SAP
United States Grand Prix. It was also the site of the 1987 Pan American
Games.

The
world's largest Children's Museum
|
But you don't have to be sports fan to come and visit. This
city is also home to the largest Children's
Museum in the world, which has a turn-of-the-century carousel, rock
climbing and the SpaceQuest Planetarium, and the largest water clock in
North America. It is 26.5 feet tall and holds 70 gallons of water.
This may sound like an odd suggestion, but why not take a self-guided tour
of the Crown Hill Cemetery?
It is the country's third largest and houses President Benjamin Harrison
and John Dillinger, among hundreds of Civil War veterans. It might not be
everyone's idea of a good time, but the cemetery is filled with history
and also offers some spectacular views.
There is also the Medal
of Honor Memorial, which is the only memorial of its kind. It honours
more than 3,400 recipients of the medal and represents 15 different conflicts,
from the Civil War to Somalia.

Circle

Artsgarden,
a great place to see, hear and do.
|
To unwind and maybe do a little shopping, Circle
Centre is the place to be. The 2-block complex right downtown offers
retailers like Nordstrom's along with more than 100 specialty stores. The
area also has plenty of restaurants and bars to relax apres-shopping.
Also, connected to Circle Centre is the Artsgarden.
Not only does this place look neat (it's suspended 7 stories above an intersection!),
it's also a great place to check out free arts exhibits and performances.
Over 1,500 artists performed there last year, so it's a good bet there'll
be something going on when you visit.
