This is the oldest city in Ontario, the fresh water sailing
capital of North America and a gateway to Lake Ontario and its 1,000 Islands.
It is half-way between Montreal and Toronto, and also less than a 2-hour
drive from Syracuse.
Kingston has a big military history. Not only is it home to a Canadian Forces
Base, it also has the Royal
Military College. This would explain the Military
Communications and Electronics Museum, which has everything from signalling
flags to today's communication systems, as well as stories about the people
who brought us these inventions.
Kingston is also a big university town. With the forementioned military
college, as well as Queen's
University and St. Lawrence
College, the town is alive during the school year, with a healthy nightlife
geared towards the student crowd.
If law and order is your thing, the Correctional
Service of Canada Museum might interest you. The building was once the
home of the Kingston Penitentiary's warden, but now houses various articles
concerned with correctional services.
But now on to spookier things. Why not take a ghost tour of Kingston's darker
past? It is a walking tour through deserted streets by lantern light. The
guide will tell you the city's darker stories, such as the hangings at the
Old Court House and the Organist's Ghost.
To finish off the night, you can head to Princess Street and dance the creeps
away at A.J.'s Hangar.
But before you go, to get a good impression of the city, take a walk along
the waterfront or a 1,000 Island cruise.
